Doxorubicin is a chemotherapy drug commonly used to treat blood cancer (leukemia), cancer of the lymphatic system (Burkitt's lymphoma and Hodgkin's lymphoma), and ovarian cancer. One of the major complications of using doxorubicin is the deterioration of heart and physical functions after treatment. Additionally, there are no known medications that counteract the adverse effects of doxorubicin, so researchers continue to seek ways to mitigate its side effects.
In a study published in Cells, Grozio and colleagues from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in California demonstrate that Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) improves survival rates in mice treated with doxorubicin. Furthermore, NMN alleviated heart and overall physical dysfunction following doxorubicin treatment. The study suggests that NMN may help mitigate the harmful side effects of doxorubicin.
Among mice exposed to doxorubicin, only 48% survived, whereas NMN significantly increased survival chances to 80%. These findings indicate that NMN enhances survival rates after doxorubicin treatment.

Although doxorubicin reduced these physical function parameters, the addition of NMN treatment restored them to the levels of healthy mice. These findings suggest that NMN restores physical functions after chronic doxorubicin treatment.

NMN May Preserve Cardiac and Physical Functions After Other Chemotherapy Treatments
This study provides the first evidence that NMN can counteract doxorubicin-induced physical impairments. Previous research using the chemotherapy drug cisplatin has shown that NMN can prevent kidney damage, counteract inner ear (cochlear cell) death, and alleviate cognitive impairment caused by cisplatin in rodents. Future research should investigate whether NMN helps block the toxic side effects of other chemotherapeutic agents, to determine if it provides protection across all chemotherapy treatments.
